As an artist I make, including my own traditions.
Thanks Giving is a time of gratitude, to honor my ancestors and also to learn something new about the indigenous people of the lands I live on. I am so thankful to be working in a warm studio with running water again. I baked a pumpkin pie in my grandma’s glass pie dish while listening to a great feature on NPR about the Lumbee Tribe in Robeson County, NC.

I don’t turkey, being a vegetarian for 35 years. I did, however, raise a flock of Northern Fulmar seabirds over the last couple days as I work on the finals details of another constructed vessel I started earlier this summer using slabs of partial felt and edge welding techniques. Nah, I am not going to start making or teaching felt animals, but I have to say, I used my reference studies and the techniques I teach in my Online & Onpoint! Course 1 Foundational Structure to amass the wool fiber to wet felt these guys to size and proportion AND attach them to an encased skin around a preexisting form. Thus the name of Course 1, Foundational Structure. The 9th edition of which begins January 12 and runs to March 23. There is still space for you. Link in bio 🔝

While walking along the Giants Causeway Coast last June my travel companion and I spotted a colony of these birds nesting in the scarpes built atop the basalt columns. This inspired my recycling of partial felt scraps from a previous project about nesting for this vessel.

Potable water has been back just over a week and I am cranking it up in the studio 🔥 … playing just a bit of catch up before the years end!

This past summer, I began working on a group of slab and cylinder constructed vessels inspired by the geology of the Northern Ireland coast…welding together the edges of partial felt (with fiber, of course). In September, I taught my first rendition of a new course on this technique up on Green Mountain @Double Island Studio shortly before Hurricane Helene hit here in WNC.

Fast forward (the last two months of time has been bizarrely elusive, disappearing while at the same time feeling like moving through mud). Now, I am preparing details for an offering of this Constructed Vessel course in June back across the big pond @vrouwwolle in Belgium and awaiting the arrival any day of the @filzfun German felt journal with my article about the very inspiration behind this here vessel. I feel so happy seeing the accomplishments of my course participants and documenting and sharing happiness is a worthy exploit!

We are wrapping up the formal 11 weeks of this 3rd edition of Course 2 Applications of Partial Felt with their second project reviews today. Then, they will have another 11 weeks to work through the lessons again or get to a study that they weren’t able to get to when it dropped because things happen. Don’t they?!

Again, I have to mention how much I appreciated having the consistency of this teaching over the past two very strange months post Hurricane Helene. Regularity with a studio practice keeps processes fluid and ideas expanding whether that is teaching, participating in a structured learning experience or showing up for yourself.

I’ll be announcing late summer 2025 dates for the 4th edition of Course 2 in my end of year newsletter. Something about this purchase made me so sentimental.

It’s a handbag of considerable labor, probably one of my most involved, between the natural cochineal dyeing, surface patterning and hand stitching of the dense felt into functioning form using 3-ply waxed linen. These bags were the beginning of my journey as a feltmaker back when I was an artist-in-residence at the Appalachian Center for Craft in TN 2002-2005 and after 100+ this was one of the last to be made and to be homed. Now I have only a handful of the wood grain patterned canteen bags remaining in my STRONGFELT ONLINE SHOP.

I really did love developing these forms, but my thumb joints, well…not so much. Maybe somewhere in the future when I finally commit to the LTRI surgery on my thumb(s) I can bring a few more into being, but I’m not counting on it. Sometimes you need to step away.

Maybe the emotion is that I am reminded of the hollowed, but strong brick buildings that remain after Helene’s waters swept through Asheville’s Arts District. With that said, it will be good when this brick bag meets its person and is filled with personal effects.

Little by little. Module by module. Study by study in my 10-week STRONGFELT Online & Onpoint! Wet Felting Courses, participants develop a deep knowing of the variables involved and I believe most importantly, the nuance of their touch, finding agency in making.

Here are a few of the incredible studies made during October 2024 in the first half of Course 2, Applications of Partial Felt. 👏 👏 👏 We use different weights of fiber layout and densities of fulled felt for a variety of purposes such as the core shape for solid forms and for surface design as seen here. We study shrinkage to get a good grasp on how to achieve not only desired size and fit, but also spacing of pattern. We design for expected shrinkage!

Excited to share some of the wonderful pieces that have been made for their Project 1 in my end of year newsletter!
Course 2 will be offered again in 2025 for those who have taken Course 1. If that is you and you want a say in when that class will be scheduled, send me a private message or email as I am now finding myself looking further out then I had been able post Hurricane Helene.

I mentioned in my last post, there is really nothing like having someone appreciate and acquire ones handmade work imbued with ones deep consideration, time and touch. I absolutely delighted in walking through the reopened areas of our Asheville North Carolina River Arts District yesterday, the first day of RADFEST. Artists shared their spaces with those whose studios were destroyed, parking lots and vacant grounds were small temporary villages of artists tents and Asheville showed up in support 🙌 🙌 🙌

In 20 some years of calling this community home, I have never seen so many people in the RAD at one time and this sign as I entered the arts district ❤️ I acquired some beautiful pieces and know that my presence, smile and purchases make a difference and same for yours. I saw folks from 20 years ago and met new beautiful people. 12-6 again today, Sunday, November 10. (That I originally posted October is a tell-tale of the recent times here 😂 😭)

It is incredible how much selling ones work spurs movement and the desire for new makings. I am committed to pay it forward at the pop-ups, re-openings and shows that are still on schedule for our creative community. We here in the city of Asheville, NC aren’t expected to have potable water until the end of November based on a Plan A and mid December, if Plan B must be implemented. I’m not at all interested in having my hands wet all day in the studio with the water that is currently coming through our pipes (only for flushing) let alone what the high chlorination and metals would do to the wool hairs. I am, however, starting to allocate some of my hauled water for small feltings.

With steady internet access again I have moved all the sold items from the shop into the archives so all the work there is now available for purchase. My website shopping cart only processes sales to US locations, but if you are outside our borders, I’d be more than happy to mark the piece sold and get you a quote for shipping. These intricate beauties on a bed of my NC grown lavendar are from my first collection of work made after returning from Nova Scotia to Asheville post COVID, 2021. 👋 Feeling a bit brighter over here, despite the pending time change on Sunday, election the following Tuesday and long road ahead for our region, country and world, for that matter. Sending some big love to Valencia ❤️

Little wins! After 35 days, my internet connection was restored on Thursday! Not surprised that the amount of lines that came down with the 6 snapped electric poles one street up was the source point of the issue. Add that to a hot shower with pressure much more than a watering can at the Reuters YMCA Gym about 20 minutes south and a fill up of filtered water at a Wine to Water supply station on Craven St in the Arts District yesterday; I am feeling RICH.

Talk about raising up the lines…I am now picking up the threads of communication for future plans that had begun just before the Hurricane and thinking beyond my immediate needs. This is privilege for sure. I look forward to sharing a couple November happenings soon, but for now I am relishing in seeing the participants’ studies and projects from my current Online & Onpoint! Course 2, Applications of Partial Felt on a larger laptop screen. They were working on these components of connection in Modules 1 & 2 when the storm hit. With pre-recorded demonstrations, they were able to forward through Modules 3 & 4 with my answering questions when I had cell phone service.

I was comforted and inspired by the colorful array

I was comforted and inspired by the colorful array of speakers, singers, faith leaders and city staff that presented a candlelight vigil for the city of Asheville, NC this past Tuesday night marking nearly a month since the Hurricane slammed our mountain region. It was tremendous to stand, one among soo many, to feel that web of connectivity, to feel that support, to feel whatever one is feeling and to be held up by our humanity.

I am a one woman business and as such, accustomed to sharing and promoting my insights, artwork and ways of teaching as a necessity to create my livelihood. I have often said, “If I don’t value my work and believe in myself how can I expect others to?” It has felt uncomfortable, however, to do so in the face of the enormity of suffering that surrounds me and more so to directly ask, would you consider supporting me NOW as I did in yesterday’s post. Admittedly self-sufficient to a fault, Hurricane Helene forcefully shouted at me to ask for help in many ways and I am in gratitude to those who have both reached out and responded in the last month (and 24hrs) with a message, phone call, long hug, invitation to pull from their well, a purchase and/or a sign up for this upcoming edition of Course 1, Foundational Structure in my Online Series.

We will delve deep into the Material, Technique & Impact involved in the STRONGFELT wet felting process of unifying individual wool filaments into sculpted fiber form. Studies presented in 6 Modules totaling 9.5 hrs of pre-recorded video demonstration accompanied by 40 pages of PDFs will provide the framework for participants to envision and build two projects of their own design through the support of individual zoom design reviews. Writing my feelings in yesterdays post was clarifying and grounding. Stitching personalized thank yous recently for those who’ve reached out to support me during this time by purchasing tools and pieces of my STRONGFELT work is particularly affirming. I did not suffer the loss of any physical assets 🙏🏻 however, I have had scheduled opportunities to sell my work canceled this fall and nearly a month of non-functioning studio time without water. I VOTED early on Saturday because you never know what might impede. I snapped this image as I walked to the nearest voting location, the University of North Carolina’s Health & Counseling Center…how apropos. Something about the collection of campaign signs and streets piled high with organized debris suggests a path forward and progress, but Hurricane Helene’s impact and that of our divided country will no doubt continue to deliver a heavy dose of grief. I am a documenter and enjoy framing an image, however I havent captured or shared any of this physical devastation, aside from the first morning on the adjacent street. None. Just haven’t been able to bring out the camera. That’s not to say I haven’t looked. It’s hard and unbelievable, but very very real. If you havent born witness, search Helene and any of these areas and have a seat: Asheville River Arts District, Biltmore Village, Swannanoa, Fairview, Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, Marshall, Hot Springs, Burnsville, Celo, Green Mountain, Bakersville, Spruce Pine, Erwin…

I meant this to be a personal/business update and positive post, but you know, #STRONGFELT. Still no potable water in our city’s pipes after 24 days, though untreated water for flushing is coming through 🙏🏻 Still no wifi and spotty cellular data, but I was able to use the Center for Craft’s Cowork space last Thursday to hold the zoom design reviews for my Online Course. So grateful for that little bit of routine, familiarity and conviviality with my students 🙏🏻

Done some therapy cooking and baking in my grandmother’s pie dish, shared it with friends and neighbors with wells and spring fed reservoirs in exchange for buckets of drinking water, laundry and two glorious, hot, proper showers 🙏🏻 I’ve had the sweetest companionship of my Osity as we help each other to regulate our nervous systems after weeks of sirens, helicopters, chainsaws and generators 🙏🏻 I harvested all the sizable tomatillos before our first cold snap and revered in the late fall opening of my hibiscus before bringing my plants inside. Hello folks. Thank you for the concern, messages and support that have been sent to WNC. It’s been two weeks since Hurricane Helene swept through our region. I took this picture of electrical debris that Friday as I walked along the neighboring street where two huge, old trees came down and snapped seven electric poles like dominoes. Still not quite sure if it reads chance or change.

Still hauling drink, cook, wash and flush water from various points as our city water system was destroyed. It is not expected to function for a few more weeks and now there is discussion of drilling wells at schools to find a way to get kids back. As an artist who typically spends much of my days washing hair in the wet felting wool process, I havent been able to find that sense of calm, agency or productivity in the studio yet, plus seems like a frivolous use of water right now.

The adrenaline of the first week was put to use helping neighbors clear trees, pull items from flooded spaces, haul flush water and refrigerate and share cooked food (as I was lucky to get electric back within 24 hrs being directly behind a main city artery.) As cell service and internet sporadically connected us to the wider area of physical devastation and harrowing experiences I found myself dazed with grief and in a paralysis of action.

As the leaves begin to fall, I have been home the past few days finishing the catch basin and drainage project that many of you witnessed me working on this summer after a near studio flood in early spring, no doubt saving me some suffering from Helene. Speaking of leaves, this is our peak season here for tourism when people flock to see the colors change along the Blue Ridge Parkway. It remains closed as do restaurants and businesses having no water to operate or far worse situations to deal with. Events, art shows and tours have been cancelled creating a loss of revenue when we are typically earning and stashing for the winter months. Please donate (I added a list in my prior post), keep WNC artists in mind when you shop for gifts this fall and come visit Asheville and surrounding communities when we open up again and help rebuild.❤️

Along a dramatically winding road in the mountains 🏔️ of Western North Carolina there is a space that was once a Vermiculture composting farm and now is an artist studio for turning raw earthen materials into works of art. You bet I dropped metaphors of 🪱 wrangling and individual wool filaments entangling!

We partially felted several weights of fiber layout including some with 3D designs. We raised and fulled a small vessel using extreme differential shrinkage and intentional directional agitation inclusive of a snug lid for our jar to hold all these learnings. We then went bigger and edge welded larger panels of partial felt into a band and those edges into a tall cylinder form, making three tiers of partial felt.

What can I say, I am the product of craft schools where one sees, learns and cross-pollinates with other media and artists. This edge welding of felt with fibers can also be compared to scoring clay and using slip for connection. There are many similar qualities/processes of clay and fiber in particular, soooo no surprise that I started my formal craft studies with clay, moved into metal and landed in fiber. What was a surprise was learning that not only was Liz, the studio owner @doubleislandstudio, studying at the Appalachian Center for Craft in TN the years before I was there as a resident artist, but we also studied ceramics with Tom Potter at U of C, Boulder at the same time in the early 90’s and were likely in the same classes!

Grateful for people who advocate and provide for the empowerment that comes with crafting physical materials + those that trust I’ll take them on a good ride and invest in STRONGFELT learning experiences. There were many who had come back for more creative fodder in this cohort as well as a young newbie who we all were delighted to help accelerate along her path. #3theresasandivy

First morning of my recent workshop after the first early morning wake up and hour commute vs the drive home after the last of five very fulled days. Actually, this could have easily been a two-week class with our pulse and late evenings! My students are bad asses. We raised the energy and some amazing forms. More to come. Definitely need to recuperate and have a life catch up first 😆

Report from the STRONGFELT Studio: One week from today we’ll begin Sculpting Hollow Felt Form with the Application of Partial felt @doubleislandstudio. Every time I teach a topic I bring something new because I am always changing my approach as a result of my observations and life lived. I am excited to have return workshop participants next week from back when I was teaching this topic at Mendocino Arts Center in 2010 and Penland School of Craft in 2016 among this cohort. Also psyched to be out of downtown Asheville and in the surrounds 🏔️

This time around, I will be addressing 3D partial felt as a means to further protuberate the protrusion of a dense shape of partial felt as well as how to edge weld slabs of partial felt together. I like to think of this as using fiber mortar as a means of building a wall from dense shapes of felt.
